Message Board

Updated 11/17/2017

This is a message board for the Class of 61 ~ any classmate or spouse may email me and update us on anything they would like the classmates to know.

50.  Donna Shetler Peckman ~ 11/17/2017 ~ Donna sent this to me via email.  Worth a read.

Ho!  we were strong, we were swift, we were brave,
Youth was a challenge, and Life was a fight.
All that was best in us gladly we gave,
Sprang from the rally, and leapt for the height.
Smiling is Love in a foam of Spring flowers:
Harden our hearts to him—on let us press!
Oh, what a triumph and pride shall be ours!
See where it beacons, the star of success!

Cares seem to crowd on us—so much to do;
New fields to conquer, and time’s on the wing.
Grey hairs are showing, a wrinkle or two;
Somehow our footstep is losing its spring,
Pleasure’s forsaken us, Love ceased to smile;
Youth has been funeralled; Age travels fast.
Sometimes we wonder; is it worth while?
There!  We have gained to the summit as last.

Aye, we have triumphed!  Now must we haste,
Revel in victory...why!  What is wrong?
Life’s choicest vintage is flat to the taste--
Are we too late?  Have we labored too long?
Wealth, power, fame we hold...ah! but the truth:
Would we not give this vain glory of ours
For one mad, glad year of glorious youth,
Life in the Springtide, and Love in the flowers.  ~~Robert Service, poet

49.  Tom McCawley ~ 11-17-2017 ~ Tom sent this thought provoking message.  Enjoy.

AND THEN IT IS WINTER

You know. . . Time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years.

It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life.. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... The winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?

I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey - or gone...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change....Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be.

Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! 'Cause if I don't on my own free will...I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!

But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know - that when it's over on this earth...it's NOT over A new adventure will begin!

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things - I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.

So, if you're not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!

Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!

"Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.

LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY! DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY! HAVE A GREAT DAY!

REMEMBER:..... "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.

"LIVE HAPPY IN THIS YEAR AND EVERY YEAR! LASTLY, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN, YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE SO - ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS.

~Your kids are becoming you.......
~Going out is good... Coming home is better!
~You forget names.... But it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!!!
~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything.
~The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore.
~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep".
~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch.
~You tend to use more 4 letter words ... "what?"...."when?"... "what?" ???
~Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere.
~You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"?!!!
~What used to be freckles are now liver spots.
~Everybody whispers.
~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet.... 2 of which you will never wear.
~But Old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old movies, and best of all, OLD FRIENDS!!

Stay well, "OLD FRIEND!"

48. Judy Bushnell Prelle ~ 11/02/2017

Fred and I are enjoying life here in western Nebraska.  Winter arrived today, with our first snow.  We are both in good health.  Fred has more aches and pains than I, but he turned 80 in September, and I just had my 74th birthday.  Been a long time since 1961!

We rarely travel, except to visit our kids in SD.  Our youngest grandson, Jace, a junior in HS, will keep us on the road when basketball season begins, so that is the kind of travelling we prefer to do.  We have one great-grandson (Felix), and we are fortunate that we get to babysit him on Tues. & Thurs.  Keeping up with a 2 yr. old is challenging, but those Cat in the Hat books that I saved, are in demand now.

Summer is our busy time, as we like gardening, flowers, have grapes, apples, peaches, raspberries and 2 pear trees that managed to produce 1 pear apiece.  Surely next year will be better, pear wise, but the grapes out did themselves.

Sharon mentioned the eclipse, and we were able to sit in our back yard and watch the whole total eclipse.  Absolutely amazing!   Highway 20 goes past our house, and traffic was bumper to bumper, but as it got closer to ‘the time’, the traffic stopped completely, the birds stopped singing & flying, the temperature dropped, it got dark enough that our yard light came on, and we could see a star in the sky, and then the cat got in her bed on the patio and went to sleep.  Eclipse was over. :-)

Have a good winter everyone.  May the Lord bless you all.

47.  Tom McCawley ~ 10/31/2017

My wife and I will be in North Platte Neb. this weekend at the Cowboy Christmas craft show. I don't know if any of our classmates live in that area, if so I would really enjoy seeing them.

Here is a link to the Cowboy Christmas Gift Show in North Platte NE:

46.  Sharon Phillip Singleton ~ 10/31/2017

As most of you already know, we are retired and loving it.  We travel to be snowbirds at least three months a year, and then other small trips throughout the other nine months.  This year health issues with family members kept us a little closer to home…and the fact that the first great grandchild was born (now eight months old).  Of my grandchildren ~ two are in Seattle, one in Spokane, one in Manila, and three here in Moscow.  Granddaughter from Seattle spent a month here this summer.
Tony gave us a scare this year by having to have emergency carotid artery surgery, but we believe this is improving his health tremendously.  I went to get my driver’s license renewed and was told that I just barely passed the eye exam ~ looks like I’ll be wearing glasses full-time soon.  I had hoped that I could make it to age 75 in March, but no such luck.  J
Doug Bedient talked about the eclipse ~ this is my story.  Tony and I and four other RV couples chose to go to Alliance to see the eclipse.  Three of the couples had never been to Nebraska.  We all stayed at my cousin’s ranch 10 miles west of town, within one mile of the line of totality.  It was fun to see our home town buzzing with activity.  Of course, we had to go the one mile to the line of totality, in my cousin’s field ~ I’m sure people driving by were wondering why they couldn’t be in that field.  Jim Reinders (the maker of Carhenge) was in town as well as the Governor of Nebraska.  Jim’s claim was that this eclipse was a “30-90” event for him ~ thirty years since he built Carhenge, and he was 90 years old this year.  Actually the most fun we had was going out to the airport before the eclipse to watch the small planes arrive.  We stood there for 45 minutes and a plane touched down every two minutes.
Prior to arriving we all had stopped in Torrington WY to visit a brother and see his first grandchild.  After the eclipse, we all went up to South Dakota to play tourist in the Black Hills.

Weekly we have lunch at my son’s restaurant, DWilly’s in Moscow, on Mondays when he and his wife work the lunch shift.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays we go to the Senior dinners in town.  We weren’t attending very long when I was cajoled into becoming Secretary of the organization.  We have met a lot of fun people our age that we tend to socialize with during the week.  We won’t be leaving to go south until after Christmas this year because my great grandson, Landon (translation ~ my 27 year old grandson Casey) wants us to be here for the great grandson’s first Christmas.

45.  Roger Rusk ~ 10/31/2017 ~ typed by Roger's wife, Jojo

Happy Halloween!  Winter storm watch here starting tonight.  Been a rough year here with the many fires in Montana.   We've also experienced several earthquakes as we're right on the fault line.  Was rough riding on the first one.  Felt like we were on the rough waves in the ocean.  Don't like them but don't know where else to move as my health continues to go down hill.

From Jojo ~ Rog is asking if anyone can call him that would like to talk (406-422-0871 Home; 909-747-2650 cell).  He'd appreciate the calls.  He doesn't text or email.  We don't go anywhere except to see the doctors.  Hope everyone else is doing well and had a good year.  We were very sad when Rog's sister Charla husband's mom (Gary), Thelma Augustin, passed away before her 106th birthday in September.  She was an awesome sweet mom and lady.  Everyone loved her including Rog and I.  We were sad we couldn't see her or go to Nebraska for her services due to Rog's poor health.

Kim, Rog's oldest daughter just got her first deer yesterday.  She is very proud.  She also is, with the help of a friend, rebuilding an engine to a 66 Ford Mustang.  I think her husband Earl bought this car for her birthday this year.

Rog has three daughters ~ Kimdele, Sharyn and Paige, nine grandkids and one great grandson .  Rog's one bucket list wish is that he makes peace with his kids and grandkids before he dies.  As some of you know Rog use to have alcohol abuse issues for many years.  He will be 29 yrs sober Nov. 12, 2017.

Rog loves Nebraska football, and the Broncos.  Neither are doing very well.  He'd love to go hunt or fish but his body says no.  Not wanting winter but.....

Anyhow best wishes to everyone.  Happy Halloween! 💀💀💀

Just me Roger Rusk😆

44.  Doug Bedient ~ 10/31/2017

The eclipse suggestion leads me to address it. The point of longest duration in the 2017 eclipse was Makanda, IL.  That is about 10 miles south of Carbondale. So we were just a few seconds less than Makanda.  We were fortunate in that the sky was clear at our home and a small neighborhood group convened to share totality and avoid crowding.

Carbondale put together many programs in hopes of having crowds for the weekend as well as Monday.  The crowds didn’t really appear until Sunday in town itself. All went well. NASA was here with numerous staff to record the eclipse and NPR/PBS and Jim Cantorini from the Weather Channel originated programming from here.

The glitch was the departure.  Everyone wanted to get on the road and the traffic to get to I57 and I24 was heavy and then 57 itself was slow going for several hours.  As it turned out visitors spread across much of southern IL so it was not busy until the end.  We live within sight of Southern Illinois Airport. About 300 planes showed up there Monday morning.  Once totality finished the takeoffs began and occurred about every 30 seconds.  Things were pretty quiet for the flyers within an hour.

We are doing well. Plan to be in FL for part of January and February. Will do a cruise to the southern Caribbean for two of the weeks and be around St. Petersburg Beach/South Pasadena for most of the other time.

Hope everyone is doing well and life is good for everyone!  Doug Bedient

PS  Carbondale is also the point of longest duration for the next American eclipse in 2024. The Cdale theme is Eclipse Crossroads for the next 7 years. Make your reservations and beat the rush.  That one travels from southwest to northeast and  we’ll have several more minutes of totality.
Each new entry will be put here:

43.   Roger Rusk (from Sharon)  ~ 09/06/2016

Tony and I stopped in Helena Montana to see Roger and JoJo Rusk.  They entertained us for the whole evening (talking about old times, health issues, etc.)  Roger looks good, but his health is not.  Using oxygen 24-7 makes travelling difficult, therefore, they will not be able to attend the reunion.  (Sharon Phillip Singleton)

42.  Patty Reddish Hafer ~ 09/06/2016

It is with deep regret that I will not be able to attend the 55th class reunion.  My husband Terry has developed heart problems and I want to stay with him during tests.  I wish all attendees a good time.

41.  Sharyn Jordan Rohm ~ 8/23/2016

Please give everyone my best wishes and hope for safe travels to and from our class reunion. As I advised you, I will not be attending the reunion this year. My sister and brother in law will be here during that time and I so look forward to seeing them. I have not seen my sister since our mother passed away almost 6 years ago. Hopefully, I will be able to attend the next one. God Bless everyone.

40.  Roger Rusk ~ 8/19/2016

(An email from Roger's wife ~ JoJo)  Hi Sharon.   How are you?  Rog was suppose to call you today but he's not doing well.  So I'm sending you this message to update you on what's happening.  The past six weeks his breathing is much worse and the heat isn't helping it any.  Been very hot here.  We are not going to be able to come after all.   He'd like a class picture any how of the classmates that go to the reunion.  He'd like to know how Charley Rusk is doing.  He wanted so bad to come but finally had to accept he cannot.   Maybe let his class mates know he sadly will miss them.   Sad Rich Voss wasn't coming too.  Rog said, he'd try to call you and talk with you. Ok?  Thanks for all you do for Rog and your class mates.  You rock girl.  Maybe before it's too late for Rog you might come see him. You're both very welcome here.   Please tell Betty Sup he's sad he couldn't talk with her also.  Thank her for all she has done too.

39.  Cheryl Edwards Harris ~ 8/10/2016

Last night (8/8/16) 13 classmates met to finalize plans for the Class of '61 55th Reunion.  We've had great participation from the Alliance classmates.  These are the final plans:

Friday, September 9th from 5:30-8:30 will be hors d'oeuvres at the Skyview Golf Course Clubhouse (turn on the road to the airport and then first left turn to the clubhouse) bar will be open - on your own.

Saturday - Masonic Center open all day - 123 West 3rd St.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. there will be coffee, water, cinnamon rolls and fruit trays available for breakfast.

Lunch will be at 12:00 p.m. catered by NE Matt's Catering

Dinner is at 6:00 catered by the West Side Event Center (formerly Country Club)

Liquid refreshment is BYOB (other than coffee and water)

There will be a memorial published in the Times Herald for our classmates that are no longer with us.

Steph's Studio will be taking our class picture at 7:30 p.m.  If you are one who forgot to send the $10 for a picture, you will be able to get a picture but be sure you get the money to Betty or Cheryl and get signed up.

There will be cards and probably a few games for those of you who just want to hang out during the day. There's a nice lounge with napping opportunities, but be aware that Lenny has first dibs on the most comfortable chair or couch.

There will be a tour of the new hospital wing for those that wish to go at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.  There will also be a coffee and cookies reception at the Carnegie Art Center at 2:30 Sat. afternoon.  (Carnegie is the library building that we used to go to.)

We've worked hard to make things very simple and enjoyable for our 55th.  It sounds as if we have 55-60 coming. Looking forward to seeing all who have signed up!!

38.  Larry Christensen ~ 8/10/2016
I really want to come back, but the ankle is in pretty bad shape.  I just put any weight on it which makes everything tough.  I really would like to see you and the rest of the class, but I don't think my foot will tolerate it.  Sorry.  Do me a favor and say hi to everyone.  Thanks.

37.  Penny Wright Wika ~ 8/9/2016
As I read all the updates about our 55th class reunion (Sharon is a jewel for keeping us all informed!!), I am so envious of all of you who will be there. I would definitely attend the reunion if I could, but my husband Norris has Lewy body dementia (balance issues, fatigue and memory loss). My job title has changed from free-lance journalist to full-time care giver. Have a great reunion!!!

36.  Gary Ehrlich ~ 8/9/2016
I found out Friday that I am going to need surgery on my right eye.  It appears that the chemo I am taking has caused a problem with my eye and I need to have a series of operations to try to stop the vision loss.  Needless to say, I won't be able to travel and I will miss the reunion.  I am totally disappointed because I have been looking forward to the visit with all of you.

Have a very good time and tell me how it turns out.  I would still like the picture.  I have paid for everything, but tell Betty to keep the registration fee and use it for expenses.

35.  Here are some sentiments from classmates who are unable to attend.
Donna  Shetler PeckhamSorry we won’t be able to attend the class reunion as we will be on a trip to No. Carolina to visit our youngest son, Chad and family.  The sold their other home and bought a new one in the country recently and we will be spending that time with them.  We only get to spend one or two visits with them per year (as all the boys live in different states, far away), so couldn’t pass up this time together.  I want to thank you for all your and the reunion committee’s hard work to put this one together (again).  I know you will all have a wonderful time together!  Tell everyone “hello” from me.

Rich Voss ~ Because of medical reasons I will not be able to attend this class reunion. It makes me very sad as I have never missed one. I know it will be lots of fun as always. Say hi to everyone, as I will miss seeing  and talking over the good times.
Barbara Erker Mielenz ~  I won't be able to attend the class reunion & will miss seeing all my SAA friends!  Hello to them all from Phoenix AZ!  Have a super time!
Gary Jordan ~ I will not be attending.
Jim BriceI want to thank you for your persistence and help with the upcoming class reunion.  I am going to take a pass on it.  We will be on a trip with friends from New Mexico over that same period.
Dick Graham As I mentioned previously I won't be attending; however there is a possibility my schedule may change and if so I would like to attend.   But I will not know if that's going to happen until mid August so no point in signing up now.   It's actually a long shot, but I am having issues with my visa here so the possibility has opened up that I may be available.
Dave Andrick.  I do not plan to attend the reunion as there is a family wedding in Jamaica is that week.
Ruby Roberts Coleman ~ I won’t be attending the reunion this year.  I am sure it will be great and a lot of fun.
Nancy (Chamberlain) Wagner Thanks for all the updating emails.  I really wish that I was able to come - but my health has been wacko lately, and I ,unfortunately, will not be able to make the trip.  Will miss seeing everyone.
Warm regards.
Mark Lotspeich ~ I find due to other scheduling conflicts that I will not be able to attend our 55th reunion.  So I won't be able to monitor the Masonic building on the day for which I had volunteered.  Have a great time.
Pat Colburn PresswoodWant to thank you for all of the work you do to keep the class of 61 still going. We may have faded away without you!  Hope everyone has a great time in September, will be thinking of you.
Jacki Vallentine YardleyI will be unable to attend the 55th Reunion in September.  I'll be thinking of you all and hope you have a great time.  Brother Nick is planning to attend his 60th, also in September.  Thanks, Sharon, for all you're doing to keep us connected.

34.  06/07/2016 ~  from Janice Phillip Lawrence ~  Janice received information that Michael Ellis (Deanne McCune Ellis' son) would like to hear from classmates of his parents.  Michael's contact information is
3106 Sweeney, Ft. Collins, CO  80526, 970-567-7602.  Hopefully some of you will get in touch with Michael to share stories with him of your time spent with his parents.
33.  04/29/2016 ~  from Glenda Harvey Rusk ~  Charley had triple bypass surgery the June 14th here at our wonderful Heart Hospital in Lincoln.  He was in hospital for five days and is home recuperating now. Soon will be starting PT. We feel blessed this was caught before a heart attack.

32.  04/11/2016 ~ Betty Lurvey Sup provided us with this picture from Tom (circa, early 1960's) of Jim Kettlehut, Jerry Culp, and Tom Kosmicki while they were in Lincoln.

31.  09/15/2015 ~ Picture from Cheryl Edwards Harris ~   Front:  Judie Von Tour Fistler, Wanda Walston Beiber, Janice Phillip Lawrence, Dyna Taylor Kozal
Back Row:  Glenda Harvey Rusk, Roseann Barry Trindle, Connie Sherlock Ackerman, Carolyn Cole Jensen, Cheryl Edwards Harris, Betty Lurvey Sup

30.  08/27/2015 ~ Informative email from Tom Kosmicki (St. Agnes Academy) ~   Sharon.   You’ve taken on a pretty big chore.  You must be “computer literate”.  It is very kind of the AHS Class of '61 to include the St Agnes graduates in the occasion, and I sincerely thank you for doing that.   I would very much like to be included in the preliminary updates and news, and will check into the blog as I did five short years ago.   At this time I would be shaky for attendance, as my son is taking me on a fishing trip to Alaska next September.   That is a long way off, of course.
Rich Voss did call me, and we will continue to keep in touch.   I get to keep in pretty close contact with Jerry Culp, Ken Lincoln, Jim Kettlehut, and Carolyn Cole, so have a good connection with the Class.  Thanks again for the invitation and the correspondence.
Hope to see you eventually, or maybe even sooner.

29.  08/26/2015 ~ Informative email from Dick Graham ~              Thanks for sending the information.     I will be looking closely at it in the future.    I was surprised (and disappointed) that the reunion is going to be in September.   Seems in the past they have always been in July/August, but I'm sure the committee has its reasons.   For sure, I would be coming if it were in July/August.    Pretty unlikely that I will be able to come in September but will have to see as time goes on.   I know there is no perfect date and no matter what the dates, someone will always have a conflict.       I would like to make it, but that's awfully close to my regular trip back and don't know if I can extend my stay.    Being halfway around the world precludes my making two trips in the space of two months.
I just got back last week from my annual trip to Nebraska/Colorado.   Was there for 3 weeks and had a nice time.   It was for a shorter time this year because I could not find anyone to work for me.   Yes, I'm still working and plan on working for at least 1-2 more years.    Then I will hang it up.
Things are going well for me here in Bangkok.   We had a nasty bombing here a week or so ago which killed 20 people.   No one has claimed responsibility.   Happened about a halfmile from where I live.   Right in the heart of Bangkok.    Don't understand people who do these things.
I have friends coming over in November and December and again in January, so will be pretty busy during that time.   It's the best time of the year to visit Thailand and my friends all know that.    I did go to South Africa again since I last saw you.  A little more than a year ago.   Had a great time as usual.   Went on a picturetaking safari AND this time went down in a cage to view the great white sharks near CapeTown.   That was an awesome experience.    The biggest we saw was about 13 feet and he banged into the cage.   Exciting for sure.   Would like to do that again sometime.  The visibility was OK, but I understand if we had been able to come a month later we would have had 100+ feet of visibility.

28.  08/25/2015 ~ Challenge from Rich Voss ~    (right click on image and "open link in new tab" ~ then you will be able to increase size and see picture better)    Since we are having lunch at the golf course, I wonder if my classmates would have the courage to play with me wearing my golf knickers.

27.  07/26/2015 ~ Information about John Anderson from Roger Brooks.  (right click on image and "open link in new tab" ~ then you will be able to increase size and read letter and see pictures)

26.  10/16/2014 ~ Roseann Barry Trindle's daughter from Cheryl Edwards HarrisIt is very sad.  Jill is beyond the pain and the stress but her family will have a hard time.  She was divorced.  Evidently she went back to her maiden name because the site is in the name of Jill Trindle.  I'd send you the site but don't know what the password was.  You could try to go to the site for Jill Trindle.  Her son is a freshman at Iowa Western.  This is what the brother posted today:

Hey everyone this is Jill's brother Chris.  As most of you already know Jill's soul...her spirit.....went back home with God yesterday evening at 6:40pm October 15th, 2014.  She was calm and peaceful right before she left us.  Thankfully my parents were with her.
I'm sure my parents will provide a few more postings before we close down Jill's site.  For me personally, I just want to thank all of you a thousand times over for all the kind and comforting words, thoughts, prayers that you have given my sister and my family.  Jill went back home way too soon for us, so this is difficult for all of us to cope with.  Please take comfort in the fact that all of Jill's physical and mental pain....her fear....is gone.  Jill is now at peace in the comforting presence of God and is happy and free.  I can hear her infectious laugh now like we all use to across the room when you knew she had arrived.

For the angels in West Des Moines....that reside at St. Francis.  Words cannot describe how overwhelmed my parents and I have been of your kindness and compassion you have shown our Jill......that you have shown my family.  I see all of you as earthly angels that were brought into Jill and Nick's life, by God, so that you could help carry the two of them all the way until Jill went home.  If that weren't enough, you took unbelievable care of my parents.....and even of me and of my girls back home in Omaha.  All of you are the Trindle family's rock and are the reason we are making it through this.  Love to you all!!!!
There will be a few more postings to come.  We will be celebrating Jill's life at St Francis in West Des Moines next Monday October 20th and will lay her ashes to rest the following day at 11AM in Omaha at the Ressurection Catholic Cemetary.  I'll post more specifics in regards to the services and times soon.
May Saint Michael pray for and protect all of you and your families, and keep you strong!
     God bless all of you.
Chris

25.  12/3/11 ~ Message from Dale Moore ~ So very sorry to hear of Mary Lou`s terrible loss! We have three eighteen yr. old grandchildren of our own.. and to lose one is unimaginable! We are so glad to have this means of keeping in touch. We will keep her family in our prayers! Thanks for letting us all know!

24.  December 11, 2011 ~ reception for Cheryl (Edwards) and Todd Harris for their 50th wedding anniversary, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1:00 ~ 4:00 pm.  Congratulations!!  Actual 50th wedding anniversary is 12/16/11

23.  11/30/11 ~ from Cheryl Edwards via Sandi Reno ~ Mary Lou's (Reno) grandson (CJ Kohut)  was found unconscious in his dorm room at WNCC.  He could not be revived.
22.  11/24/11 ~ from Mickey Coleman ~ we received this from some friends from when were stationed with the 76th Army Band from Orleans,  France.  There are several of us that keep up with each other.  Thought you might like to pass it on to some of our class mates. (forward from Paul's son, Scott) ~ I am sad to say that my Father (Paul Thiessen) passed away yesterday.  Dad was a unbelievable Father and a extremely talented musician.  As a musician myself, he was my inspiration!  We will all miss him deeply.
21.  11/24/11 ~ from Paul Thiessen's daughter, Trichia ~ I am Paul's daughter in law. I wanted to let you know Paul passed away yesterday afternoon.
20.  11/24/11 ~ from Paul Nelson ~ Vietnam Wall link ~ click on the link and find the city in which you went to high school and look at the names.  Click on the name and it will give details of the death.
19.  11/23/11 ~ from Jim Brice ~ I can't remember whether I thanked you or not.  I want you to know how much I appreciated all the effort you put into the class reunion this year. You did an outstanding job and I appreciated all you did to make it possible plus the booklet you sent me. It was really interesting to see what everyone has done with their lives since graduating from high school. Thanks again Sharon.
18.  10/19/11 ~ Many things happened in the two months since our 50th class reunion while I was away from home.  I will try to recap messages I have received here from 8/28 to today.

Mail received after I arrived home:
  • From Ken Lincoln ~ to Sharon ~ “You are a jewel, and I add my thanks to everyone else in the class for their tireless dedication in bringing the reunion together.  My single regret is in not being able to make the trip and visit all of you.  The booklet with all those faces and memories and stories is a treasure.  I’ll reread these many times and collect some more to add to the 55th gathering.  Be well and God bless.”  Ken planted a tree in our honor in a National Forest (www.arborday.org/giveatree
  • From Donna Shetler ~ to Sharon ~ “I received the 50th reunion booklet and the notes from our classmates that you sent to me.  Thank you very much for doing that!  Thanks also for the emails and good job you did to keep us all informed.  I enjoyed the Blog, the pictures of everyone as children, and hearing of classmate’s memories.  Thank you again.  Love, Donna”
  • From Sharyn Jordan ~ “Thank you so much for sending me the class booklet.  I really wanted to attend but my Sciatica is causing lots of discomfort and I can’t sit for very long.  I do plan to attend the next one though.  I have finished my college classes I was taking and what a wonderful experience it was.  I graduated with honors and a gpa of 3.72.  Missed graduating with highest honors by just a very short margin (must have 3.75 or above) but after all these years, I was quite pleased.  I look forward to receiving the booklet and also seeing you at our next reunion.  Thank you again.  God bless.”
10/4/11 Reunion Committee held an "after reunion" meeting ~ They talked about how much fun they had and they all felt it was a success.  Meeting was held at Cheryl Edwards.  Attending were Judie VonTour, Connie Sherlock, Wanda Walston, John Bauer, Lloyd Howell, and Denny Shimp.

10/3/11 ~ Roger Brooks ~ 10 days out from surgery and doing great.  On 9/25/11, Roger had previously sent this message about his upcoming surger.
FOR ALL CONCERNED:  I WILL BE GOING INTO SANFORD HOSPITAL FOR BY PASS
SURGERY September 22, 2011 AT 0700 HOURS FOR 3 OR 4 BY PASSES.  WILL
BE IN THE HOSPITAL 4 – 5  DAYS THEN 4 – 8 WEEK RECOUP.

10/3/11 ~ Betty Lurvey Sup's husband, Gary, died after a long illness.  Betty was unable to attend the 50th class reunion due to Gary's ill-health.

9/17/11 ~ A former classmate, Rolland Sward died today.  Rolland did not graduate with us, but many may remember him from lower grades when he attended school with our class.

8/28/11 ~ from Donna Shetler ~ Our son, Brent, passed away today from an extended illness.  Please keep us in your prayers.  We will have a memorial service in Nogales, AZ Sept. 9 at the Martinez Funeral Home.  I will send the particulars after the arrangements are complete.  Love, Richard and Donna Peckham

Before the Reunion
17.  7/20/11 ~ Paul Nelson seems to be doing fantastic after his heart problems ~ his note with this picture ~  "How many of the committee will be able to help me back up this little 10000 ft mountain.  A nice little 6 hour hike last week in Rocky Mountain Park.  Time to go to cardiac rehab."

16.  7/19/11 ~ Our 50th reunion  committee  ~ meeting for the last time!  Here they are:  Mickey, Carolyn, Judie, Janice, Rosa Lee, Cheryl, Connie; Barbara, Don, Linda, Lloyd and John.  Thank you committee.  (Study this picture ~ then when you come to the reunion...you just might recognize a dozen classmates)!
15.  6/14/11 ~ Info about Paul Nelson after I made a lengthy phone call ~ Paul Nelson arrived by ambulance to Omaha’s Creighton Hospital for a 24+ hour stay.  After a successful heart stent and bubble procedure, Paul is back to exercising regularly ~ cardiac rehab, running, and swimming.  He and Doug Bedient plan to come to the reunion in August together.”
14.  from Denny Shimp ~ Loren Studt has health issues and will be unable to attend the reunion (actually Loren was able to attend Friday evening and Saturday ~ good job Loren).  Don Sanders has been moved by his son to Salt Lake City UT to be cared for there. (phone call from Denny to Sharon)

13.  from Tom McCawley ~ Sorry to hear about Richard Cowles would liked to have had time to sit down and chatted with him as I've found out we were distant relatives.  My grandfather's sister had married a Cowles from S.D. who was Richard's father or grandfather.   So much for that tid bit
Sorry to say I won't be able to make it to this reunion as my wife and I are committed to a booth in the Montana State Fair that weekend with our crazy raisins business.  We're on line check us out at crazyraisins.com  Thanks.

12.  from Gailynn Huck ~ Clyde had another setback Saturday (June 4th) he collapsed, due to low oxygen levels, spent two days in the hospital.  He was released on Monday and is on oxygen.

11.  From Delores Behm ~ belongs to Zonta.  She attended club activities in Denver on April 28th sponsored by the Women's Bureau, U.S. Department of Labor ~ "Women Working Together, Writing the Next Chapter of Her Story".

10.  From Bryan (Dixie Johnson's) son (4/13/11)This just happened this morning. Dixie tripped and broke her knee cap, shattered her wrist, and swelled one eye shut.  She goes in for surgery 4/14/11 in Scottsbluff.  (Update from Cheryl ~ I saw Dixie yesterday(4/23).  She's in Good Sam and looks like she met the wrong end of a truck.  I saw her about three weeks ago and she said - "look, no broken bones."  I reminded her of that.  She's in a wheel chair because she broke her knee cap.  She also shattered the bone just above her wrist and broke her cheek bone .

9.  From Dick Graham ~ I went to Laos last week with some friends from the US.  Here are a couple of pictures.   Still a communist country but really lovely.  (4/1/11)

8.  From Rosalee Cornette ~ picture of mini reunion in Alliance.  A note from Gordon Hoff (Rosalee's husband) ~ Here's a picture of "The Girls"  meeting in the 1910 coffee house.  No leaves were left unturned!!!!

7. From Jane Gorder ~ health report ~ (2/12/11) Sorry it's taken me so long to get this all together.  Everything that happened in December really happened so fast, very unexpected for me and overwhelming to comprehend.  Once I went to the Nebraska Heart Institute in Lincoln in December, my carotid artery surgery was December 21st and my triple by-pass and heart valve repair on the 23rd.  I was so lucky to have the very best of doctors in the area.  They actually sent me home five days later on December 28th which was a good thing but seemed a bit scary at the time.  Since my daughter Laurie could stay with us for about three weeks to help, I think that was the reason they let me go home.  Poor Laurie really got the brunt of all the "fun" caregiving time and she did a great job.  Now we can laugh about all the "whatever works for you, Mom" times.  Our son Mike came a week later and by that time I had started cardio rehab so we spent time exercising and walking around the deserted mall on the days i didn't have rehab--truly exciting for him.

I just finished my fourth week of rehab and still walk the other days at the still not exciting mall--where we had a business for 18 years, so it's a lot of "remember when" time.  My doctor's appointments have all been great and they are "amazed" at how well I'm doing...I always love to hear that.  The end of this next week I will begin going back to the store for a few hours every day.  We were lucky that when this all began Bernie had January off from the college, but now that he's teaching again I need to get back to the routine at the store, with some sympathetic help from the employees.  I'm still a little nervous about how all that will go but I'm sure it will all be fine.

I feel so blessed that the timing for the reunion site happened when it did and with the wonderful guidance and organization you have given it Sharon.  It was
so wonderful and encouraging to get all the e-mails and wishes and prayers you sent my way.  I could never tell you how much they have meant to me and my family.  It has been a time of reconnecting and new beginnings that make every day so special.

We will be looking forward to the reunion and actually connecting again in person. I hope to hear from you again before then too.  Those messages were a big part of my lifesaver too.

My love to all of you, Janie (or as I am known in the hospital world, Lois)

6.  From Lorraine Evans ~ health report ~ Things are going pretty well.  The radiation for me has been every day for 28 days and I have had three chemo treatments so far.  After the radiation I will begin to have two chemo treatments a week for awhile.  So far the radiation seems to be reducing the size of the nodules that had appeared.  I guess my cancer is fairly rare, with only about 20% with my type.  Breast cancer is a terrible curse and hopefully some day there will be a cure.  Bruce has also been having radiation and is also doing pretty well.  So far both of us are hanging in there.  I’m continuing to work and it seems to help keeping the mind busy with things besides health problems.  Will try to write later on.

5.  From Ruby Roberts (02/01/11) ~ I am officially a great grandmother. Dexter Edward Guynan was born at 6 a.m. this morning. He weighs 8 lbs. 2 oz., 20 1/2 inches long. His mother had some major complications and had to be taken into surgery immediately, but all are well now, just tired.

4.  From Bill Todd's wife, Sandy (1/30/11) ~ Bill is doing remarkably well.  When the surgeon got in and started working he found that Bill's spine was very soft and was afraid the screws would not hold, but had to go on with surgery.  He also found a large fatty tumor and a large cyst that was pressing against the spine and removed both.  Normally, they would have gotten Bill up the night of the surgery but they waited 3 days and for a hard plastic brace to be made for him, before he could get up from bed.  After one day of physical therapy he was sent to a rehab center to and is still there as I write this.  My daughter and I have stayed with him everyday and night to ensure his care was good.  I am hoping that he will get to come home sometime this coming week.  He is doing really good and can get up from his bed or chair with just the strength of his legs.  I am so proud and happy for him.  His pain is such now that he has two pain pill's at 7 a.m. and two around 5 p.m.  and that is all he does.  Believe me he wasn't the sharpest tack when they had him on every four hours.  That is the main reason we stayed with him.  Today my son, Bill, and daughter Amber will be over to get the house set up for his home coming.  He has to stay in the brace for two months and when he comes home they will put a bone stimulator on him to help the spine heal quicker.  So it looks like he just might make the 50th celebration, in pretty fair shape.  We hope everyone else on the sick list is getting along as good as Bill is, and please be careful, because at our age anything can happen and just all of sudden you are down.  I will update you as soon as I get him home.  Thanks for passing this along, and thanks to everyone who sent their prayers and cards.  See you later this year,  Sandy Todd

3.  From Bill Todd's wife, Sandy (1/8/11) ~ "Seems as if so many sad things are happening to the class of 1961.  The deaths of course are the worst because they are the most final of all.  Bill isn't dying but his health, like many of his school mates, is not the best.  He will be going into surgery on the 17th of January to get three of his vertebrae fused together.  At the moment he can barely walk and he is falling.  Of course, he makes light of it but he is in terrible pain.  The wear and tear that our generation has done to our bodies through out the years has been devastating, and now we find we are definitely not built Ford Tough.  The operation should get him out of 80 percent of his pain, if it works, and he does have some good doctors.  Bill has marfans syndrome which took the lives of his mother (Catherine Todd), brother (Bobby Todd) and sister (Judy Todd) all in their mid forties.  Bill did not get the onset of the disease until he was in his fifties and did not know until 2002, after he retired, that his aorta had an aneurysm ready to take his life.  He had his aortic valve, ascending aorta, and his aortic arch all replaced.  It left him in pretty good shape but with a breathing problem which has him now on oxygen.  The problems with his heart and lungs are of course a large measure of concern with his upcoming operation and along with a small but growing aneurysm in his lower aorta.
So, I am asking you all to include him in your prayers.  He wants so badly to be able to come to the reunion in the fall and it will take a good while for him to recover.  After being his wife for 46 years now I know he would never want me to tell you how bad a shape he is in, but I think that your prayers and thoughts might help keep his spirits up.  So add him to your prayer lines and help us win this battle so we can see you all in the fall.
Thanks Sharon for the great job you are doing.  Bill isn't a computer person but I keep him up to date with your e-mails.  May God Bless you all.
        ~~Bill's wife, Sandy Todd"

2.  1/9/11 ~ from Bernie and Jane (Gorder) ~ Sharon and Classmates,  Jane has been home about ten days now and is doing quite well.  On the first visit to the doctor, he kept saying, "You look great!"  So we are very encouraged.  Two more appointments next week and then cardio rehab begins.  But should go well.  Jane is very grateful for all the good wishes and greetings and prayers.  She and I feel they have helped a lot.  Our daughter, Laurie, who lives in Moab, Utah, has been able to be here and help immensely, and so we have been very happy about that.  Thanks again to everyone.  ~~Bernie and Jane

1.  from Betty Heinlein Walker (1/2/11) ~ Sharon,  I thought this was such a good message and you could  get it to many people.  Thanks Betty Walker  ~~  Message follows

This has been around before, but it make you think .......
We were buying Christmas cards (on sale of course) for next year and found that almost all of them were printed in China, even the Hallmark brand. At Dillards we found cards printed in America that were no more expensive and were 50 percent off in Dillards'  "after Xmas sale" - a no brainer.
ONE LIGHTBULB AT A TIME...A physics teacher in high school, once told the students that while one grasshopper on the railroad tracks wouldn't slow a train very much, a billion of them would. With that thought in mind, read the following, obviously written by a good American...
Check this out.  I was in Lowes the other day for some reason and just for the heck of it I was looking at the hose attachments... They were all made in China . The next day I was in Ace Hardware and just for the heck of it I checked the hose attachments there. They were made in USA . Start looking...
In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - even their job ... So, after reading this email, I think this lady is on the right track. Let's get behind her!

My grandson likes Hershey's candy. I noticed, though, that it is marked made in Mexico now. I do not buy it any more.

My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico .... now I have switched to Crest. You have to read the labels on everything...

This past weekend I was at Kroger... I needed 60 W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off-brand labeled, "Everyday Value."  I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price...

The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA in a company in Cleveland , Ohio .

So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here...

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets.... yep, you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada ... The Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at almost half the price!

My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA -AND the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time! Stop buying from overseas companies!

(We should have awakened a decade ago...)

Let's get with the program and help our fellow Americans keep their jobs and create more jobs here in the   USA.
