Pillar in the Park

Pillars in the Park ~ COMPLETED 10/13/2018

22 DAYS TO COMPLETION FOR ONE PILLAR ~ Total $1,000.00

Email sent 10/17/18
Thank you all for your donations…you made our class proud.  I’m sure the class of ’65 (Judy Phillip Mann, my cousin) got on the bandwagon because she saw what we were doing.

Listed below is a summary of all of you that have donated (31 so far) ~ most recent are:  Paul Nelson, Gary Jordan, Konnie Herman, Dick Voss, Gary Ehrlich, Roger Rusk, and Linda Munger.

Memorials:
  • Linda Munger ~ to honor Ronnie McFall
  • Jim Brice ~ to honor Leonard Heckman, Dick Bilstein, Anita Allen, and Jim Kettlehut
  • An anonymous donor  ~ to honor Linda York, John Anderson, Lemoine Trout,  Myrtle Chandler, and Doug Young
  • Wanda Walston ~ to honor Myrtle Chandler

When I look over the class list of those who haven’t donated, I am surprised.  If you guys donated, we could probably have two pillars!!!  We’re waiting for you to join us.  J  I do know there are a couple more that will be donating soon from our class (one was in Scotland when we started this, but should be returning soon).

Notes on facebook about our class
I have to say wow to the class of 61.  Your class, by far, has had the most members that sent a donation. You all out did all the younger pups by how many participated. You all have my gratitude. You've touched my heart. Betty Jo Garett started with a challenge and check, Sharon Singleton rounded you all up, and you all put up a pillar...so awesome!! Thank you all.  (Tami Cox)

I have been asked how the class challenges work and how some get it so fast. In every class like Brett & Sally in 78, they contacted people thru email, facebook, class pages, and they spearheaded it.  Carol Crum ,Suzanne Debus Bedient, Sharon Singleton in 61, and so on. They did this in their classes.  Hope this helps.  (Tami Cox)

Well, '71 was the oldest class with a pillar and '61 showed us up. Now if we could just get those classes in between to get their pillars! (Carol Crum)

Not sure who the Betty Jo Garrett is unless it is Anita’s sister.  Does anyone know?

Thanks again to the 31 members of our class who donated!!

~~Sharon

Our challenge is to get a total of $1000.00 by Halloween, 10/31,

Email sent out 10/14/2018 ~

Linda Munger had a great idea.  She is sending $19.61 for herself, and another $19.61 in honor of Ronnie McFall (our first classmate to pass away in 1959 due to a car crash).

I know others (Wanda Walston) donated extra money in Myrtle’s memory.

An anonymous memorial donation was made in honor of classmates of ’61 who have passed.  I’m not sure if the anonymous donor named them, but this note was put on the pillar blog with the names of Myrtle Chandler, John Anderson, Linda York, Lemoine Trout, and Doug Young

Well….WE DID IT ~ you classmates are amazing ~ here is our timeline for getting a Pillar (Total cost $1,000.00)(Total days to raise this money ~ 22 days!!!!

  • 9/21/2018 ~ 1st email sent to AHS Class of  ’61 requesting donations for Pillars for the Park in Alliance
  • To date, we are the oldest class donating!!
  • 9/21/2018 ~ Lloyd Howell won the challenge of which class member would donate first!!  Congratulations, Lloyd!!

Below is a running total of dollars showing how fast our class was donating:

  • 9/24 ~ $238.04 ~ Total received from several members in first three days
  • 9/28 ~ $303.04 ~ Seven days from first email
  • 10/1 ~$425.65
  • 10/3 ~$627.65
  • 10/5 ~ $667.26
  • 10/7 ~ 717.26
  • 10/10 ~ $761.87
  • 10/10 ~ Third email sent ~ a reminder.  J
  • 10/12 ~ $906.87
  • 10/13 ~ $1000.00 plus…..we made it….we will have a pillar in the park!!!!!!!!!!!!

No reason to stop now.  Do we want another pillar???  I know donations will be received from Doug B, Mickey C, Linda M, and Paul N soon.

The total project still needs $194,000.00 before they will get the matching $250,000 from the anonymous donor, so it wouldn’t hurt for our class to keep donating to help with that issue.

Well, as I said above, you guys are amazing!!!!  Thank you for joining me in this project for Alliance Pillars in the Park and the AHS 1961 class.  We did great!!!!

Below is a list of those 26 classmates that I know donated and their check was received in Alliance by 10/13.  If I have missed someone please let me know.

Thanks to all of you who have sent money to the "Pillar in the Park" challenge.  First one to donate was Lloyd Howell....he lives in Alliance, and as soon as he read about the challenge, he walked down and gave Tami his check.  Good job, Lloyd!!

We are the oldest class that are donating ~  our average age is 75 in 2018.  Keep up the good work.  We would like to have a total of at least $1000.00 to pay for one pillar with "Class of 61" engraved on the pillar.

We have received $303.04 in just nine days ~ at this rate we'll have the pillar paid for in 30 days (by October 21st).

First Challenge, 9/21/2018

I was in Alliance last week-end for a memorial for my Uncle Bob Phillip (Janice Phillip Lawrence's Dad).  After visiting with Wanda Walston Beiber, Connie Sherlock Ackerman, and Sharan Sallquist, I feel that our class has been challenged to provide funding for one "pillar in the park" ~ Cost for each pillar is approximately $1000.00 (Alliance City Park).

If 51 of our classmates each donate $19.61 (of course, you got it, the year we graduated made into dollars and cents), we could make a difference and have "Class of 1961" engraved on one of the pillars.

Now....if you would like to donate more ~ feel free.  Maybe $61.00 is more your style...that's great!!

OK, Let's do it!!!
Make checks payable to APF/Pillars for the Park
In the memo, write AHS Class of 1961

Send check to:  Tami Swearingen, 1243 Grand Ave, Alliance NE  69301
Any questions???  call  Tami (308-760-4929)

Click here for an interesting article about an anonymous donor that will match up to $250,000.  Which means if the class of 61 puts in $1000.00 it will actually be worth $2000.00 towards the total project.

If you want to learn more, Google search for "Alliance NE pillars".  It's amazing the amount of information out there about this project...you can buy mugs and T-shirts, too.

There is a facebook page to keep you updated on the progress.  I found it very interesting and spent quite a lot of time reading all the posts.  And...YOU can join the facebook page!!!

Here is one of the things I found on the pillar facebook page regarding donations already received, which means we could be the oldest class to donate...no others before class of 1966!!!!  Of course, I see that my brother's class (Bill Phillip, 1971) has already purchased a pillar and still going.  Help me out here ~ we can't have that!
