60th High School Reunion

AFTER REUNION (Updated 8/30/2021):

60th Class Reunion picture

Notes from classmates:

Betty Merritt:  It sounds like I missed a good reunion. I would have given anything to have been able to attend. Everyone looked great. I enjoyed reading about it on the blog. Sharon, you have been wonderful about keeping everyone informed. Thank you so much for all you've done.

Judy Bushnell:  Thanks for offering to provide a classmates email.  I sure would like to have Barbara Boness’ email address.  When she and I talked, we neglected to exchange addresses.  Thanks for all you do.  The reunion turned out well.  It was good to see everyone.

Glenda Harvey:  Thanks for the update on reunion. So neat about Jim K. and Rich Voss too. Take care dear friend.

Paul Nelson:  Thanks for all your work Sharon. Hope you had an uneventful trip home.

Connie Sherlock:  Thank you Sharon for posting this.  Our reunion was so much fun.  I loved the article about Jim and the other athletes also.

Glenda Harvey:  Thanks Sharon for all your hard work in the class reunions. Sure hated missing this successful one and Rosie asked me to share her pictures. Take care.

Curt Ginn:  Thanks for the picture and names.

Barbara Boness:  Thanks so much  for the update. The party was AWESOME.  Glad I was back in Nebraska and able to attend.  We as a class were so lucky to have been able to do this. Thanks to everyone who did all the work that made it possible.  Thank You.

Carolyn Cole:  Thanks for the update.  Roger and I really enjoyed the reunion and appreciate everyone who did all the work and all who attended.  We also missed those who couldn't come.  It was a happy time and sad to say goodbye.

Konnie Herman:  I want to thank all the people that put together our 60 year reunion. It’s hard to keep track of us old people but what a success it was for us all. We missed some of our classmates but they were with us in spirit. Thanks to the Alliance crew for a great time. Let’s do it again.   If any of you get close to Columbia Missouri please stop by.

Lol Konnie Herman Graham:

Sharon Phillip:   Glenda and Charley Rusk have kept a scrapbook throughout our 60 years away from high school.  It was delivered to the 60th reunion by Roseann.  After everyone looked through it during the reunion, Cheryl took it to the Knight Museum.  Penny brought many of her class reunion pictures taken over the years and invited anyone to take any of the pictures they wanted.  Very clever.  I wish I had thought to do that.

The hardest part of the reunion was leaving on Saturday night, knowing we may never see some of these classmates again.  I hope we will try to keep in touch.  If you want anyone’s phone number or email, just ask (via return email or text ~ 208-301-2060).  If any classmate does not want their information given out, please let me know and I will make note of your request.

Here is a note from Cheryl Edwards:

As Sharon said, the reunion was great - but the goodbyes were hard. Over the years there have been so many classmates who have worked to make our reunions a success.  I think we all agree that Sharon Phillip Singleton is the first one we think of when we talk about the success of the reunions.  Her blog has kept all of us together for many years and has taken many hours of work.  She's tracked down missing classmates, posted letters both sad and happy, entered obits and lots of information.  So thank you, Sharon, from the bottom of our hearts.

Connie and I have closed out the class account and paid all the bills.  We had $1881.78 left after bills and we (the Class of '61, will be awarding a $1,000 and a $500 scholarship next year to two students who will be attending a trade/tech school.  The remainder of the money will go into the Alliance Public Schools Foundation to be used in other scholarships.

Social media, phones, texting and other things have made it a little easier to stay in touch.  Hope that some of us do.  Until we meet again, Vaya Con Dios my friends, love you all.

(Sharon might not want to print this but she'd better because she's the glue that has held us together and she deserves some recognition.)

Thank you, Cheryl for those kind words.  As I have always told all of you, I had the most fun keeping the class together, talking with everyone, and making the blog.  The blog is not up to date at this time but will be soon.  I will let you know when.  Hopefully I will get more pictures to insert in the blog from all of you.   ~~Sharon

1st email after reunion that was sent out:

Our 60th class reunion was a huge success.  We missed all of you who were unable to attend.  Thirty-one classmates attended as well as many guests of classmates.  Here is a list of those attending in alphabetical order (by maiden name for the women).  The two meals at the West Side Event Center were well received and the bismarks/coffee/Juice social on Saturday morning was a big hit.  Thank you, Janice Phillip Lawrence, for opening up your home to the classmates and guests.  ~~Sharon Phillip Singleton

An announcement was made by Jerry Culp regarding Jim Kettlehut who will soon be inducted in the AHS Hall of Fame.  Information I found online is below regarding this future event.  To this date, Jim’s record has never been broken.

Found in Scottsbluff High School Yearbook, Class of ‘61

Three records were broken during The West Nebraska High School Track and Field Meet. Jim Kettlehut, of Alliance, broke the record for the 880 in l:59.9 and also came back to anchor the Alliance mile relay team in a 3:37.2 clocking to wipe out the 3:38.l record posted by Scottsbluff last year.

The Lincoln paper listed Jim’s time in the 880 as 1:57 as well as Rich Voss’s, high jump, 6-4.  Both were gold medal winners on 5/21/1961.

Alliance High School Activities Hall of Fame

The Activities Hall of Fame is organized as a way of maintaining the rich heritage and tradition of the successful activity programs at Alliance High School.  The Hall of Fame will serve as a means of recognizing, preserving, and honoring the athletes, performers, coaches, sponsors, directors, contributors and alumni who made significant contributions to activity programs.   The Activities Hall of Fame will help maintain the spirit, pride, and sense of community, as well as serving as a historical account of the great activity traditions of Alliance High School.

The selection committee meets once a year to vote on new members.  In order for the nominee to be inducted, the nominee must receive at least a 75% majority vote from the selection committee members in attendance.  There will be a maximum of four (4) Hall of Fame members inducted each year.

CLASS OF 2021 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

On April 19th the selection committee met and reviewed 44 outstanding applications.  The list currently contains 22 state champions or 1st team all-state athletes.  29 different nominations received at least one vote from committee members.  The 30 new nominations this year made the process extremely difficult for the committee.  Finally, six incredible athletes were settled on to represent this year’s class.

Jim Kettlehut 1961.  Jim was a two-time letter winner in football.  He was a three-time letter winner in basketball and was named all big-ten.  In track he still holds the 800 record and his time in 1961 was the state record.  He was named outstanding male athlete in both 1960 and 1961.
