Orange County Obituary...
Cowles, Richard "Vern", age 68, passed away peacefully at his home in Huntington Beach, California on June 1, 2011. Vern was born February 20, 1943 in Imperial, Nebraska and graduated from high school in Alliance, Nebraska. After completing his Bachelor of Science degree in economics at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he received his Master of Arts degree in economics from Washington University. Shortly afterward, he joined the United States Navy to serve his country in the midst of the Vietnam War. His tenure in the service took him to many foreign ports, but Hawaii remained his favorite vacation spot for the rest of his life. In the early 1970's, Vern moved to Los Angeles, California, where he enjoyed a thirty-three year career with the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters. He was a very active member in several parishes of the Episcopal Church and received a Master of Arts degree from the School of Theology At Claremont (Claremont, California) in 1989. Throughout his life, Vern contributed generously to various charities and causes. Vern was a wonderful gardener, an ardent reader, and a published writer. His love of travel took him to Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South America, the Caribbean, and Polynesia. Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Minnie Cowles and brother, Jerry Cowles. He is survived by his brother, Donald Cowles; sister-in-law, Lucy Cowles; two nieces and a nephew; his longtime companion, Dixon Hearne; and many, many friends. He will be remembered as a kind and giving man, always up for friendly debate, a brisk game of cards, and wry humor. Loved and respected by friends, family, and work colleagues, he leaves a void in each of their lives. At his request, Vern was cremated by the Neptune Society of Orange County. No memorial service is planned, as he wished for everyone to remember him in their own personal way. In lieu of flowers, Vern requested donations to the American Pancreatic Association at www.american-pancreatic-association.org. All of your contributions in honor of Vern will help to advance the cure of this type of cancer. Personal notes of condolence may be directed to Dixon Hearne at: vcowles@socal.rr.com or home address, 8566 Larkhall Circle #812A, Huntington Beach, CA 92646.
