Obituary for Charles "Charley" Henry Rusk

Charles (Charley) Henry Rusk, 78, formerly of Alliance, Nebraska, passed away November 21, 2021 at Rock Regional Hospital in Derby, Kansas.
Charley was born August 13, 1943 in Alliance, Nebraska to Everett and Etna Rusk. He graduated from Alliance High School in 1961 and earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1974 from Chadron State College.
After graduating high school, Charley enlisted and served in the United States Army from 1962-1965. Once discharged, he served as Deputy Sheriff in Box Butte County, Nebraska before moving to Washington D.C. to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the printing department. In 1971, Charley started his career as a locomotive engineer at BNSF Railroad where he worked for 33 years before retiring in 2004.
In 1972, Charley and his then-wife Carol (Farr) welcomed a son, Bradley Everett. Charley later married Glenda (Harvey-Shankland) in September 1987, becoming a step-father to Jason and Doug Shankland.
Charley and Glenda resided in Alliance before retiring to Lincoln, Nebraska in 2004. There, Charley enjoyed spending time attending Husker football games and traveling around the country, as well as visiting with family and friends. Throughout his life, he also enjoyed fly fishing, tying his own flies, taking the occasional hunting trip, and researching his family heritage.
Charley is survived by his wife Glenda Rusk of Derby, Kansas (formerly Lincoln, Nebraska); son Brad Rusk and his wife Kecla along with their children Keverett, Kileya, and Brayeshla all of Sidney, Nebraska; step-son Jason Shankland and his wife Angela Criser of Wichita, Kansas; and step-son Doug Shankland of Denver, Colorado. After graduation I went to Chadron State on a football scholarship.  I enjoyed the football end of it, but not so much the studying so after one semester, I joined the Army for a three year hitch from 62 to 65.   After the army, I worked as Deputy Sheriff for two years in Alliance, and during that time I married Carol Farr.  We moved to Washington, DC where I worked for the F.B.I. for two years. We decided the big city wasn't for us so when we moved back to Alliance, I hired out on the Burlington Northern Railroad.  I commuted back and forth to Chadron State College for three years while I was working for the railroad and obtained my BA.  Carol and I had a son, Brad, who was born in 1971.  I was divorced from Carol and married Glenda (Harvey) in 1988.  Brad and Glenda's son were very entertaining to us through their teens, always making us laugh and we never had a dull moment raising two teenagers.  My hobby is fly fishing and I like to tie my own flies for myself and fly fishing buddies.   I retired as an engineer on the railroad after 33 years and shortly thereafter Glenda & I moved to Lincoln.  After we finished our downstairs, I decided I wanted a part time job so went to work for Service Master who dealt in commercial cleaning.  I drove a van delivering cleaning supplies to the buildings that had contracted Service Master.  I decided I was deserving of a complete retirement so retired from my part time job one year ago.  We both love to travel and follow the University of Nebraska sports.  Looking forward to seeing friends from the Class of 61 in August.
